The Encounter is a new intergenerational dance-theatre project being developed in NYC and with diverse communities around the world with a mix of professional, pre-professional, and non-professional performers. The project merges a unique community-based work with the work of highly trained professional dancers from Kimberly Bartosik/daela. In each location that hosts the project, Bartosik will build a new creation with local performers- dancers and non-dancers- and will pair this work with select material from her NYC-based version of The Encounter. The bridge between the works is a sharing of themes, concepts, gestures, and physicality, and the result is an encounter between communities and an audience’s encounter with different bodies in motion.
The Encounter: NYC, supported by a Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU Virginia B. Toulmin Fellowship for Women Leaders in Dance, was seeded in summer 2021 and will continue to be developed through 2024.
Upcoming Encounter projects :
The Encounter: Buffalo (May 2022) and The Encounter: Buffalo + NYC (Fall 2022) being created in partnership with Torn Space Theater, with support from NYDanceForce and the Nathan M. Clark Foundation
The Encounter: Italia (2022), supported through Woman Made, a winning project of Boarding Pass Plus '21/'22 of the Italian Ministry of Cultures through a partnership with Art Garage and American Dance Abroad.
