Kimberly Bartosik’s Ecsteriority 1 & 2 combines the choreographer’s unique sense of architecture and spatial configuration to create a meditation on decay, eros, and the collapsibility of space. The piece is a two-part, evening length work commissioned by Danspace Project, and will premiere at St. Mark’s Church-in-the Bowery November 6-8, 2008. The work features lighting design by Bessie Award winning designer Roderick Murray, music by Luke Fasano, founding member of the rock band, Naysayer, and sets by Bartosik and Murray.
The first section, commissioned by The Kitchen, where it premiered in April 2007, was originally created for Tara Lorenzen and Matthew Winheld. Recreated in 2008 for the powerful performers, Marc Mann and Elke Rindfleisch, Ecsteriority1 is a visceral experiment in restraint and physical, sexualized attack. The dance is one of distance and distorted closeness, where the space between the performers is stretched in one moment and collapses in the next.
Abruptions in exterior life and the decaying of logic define Ecsteriority2. Performed by the extraordinary Wally Cardona and Derry Swan, the piece consists of unfulfilled scenarios created through a series of awkward relocations and repositions.
