The Materiality of Impermanence (2010)

The Materiality of Impermanence investigates the traces and residues which bodies leave on each other, and the ways bodies take up space inside each other. Distinctly cinematic, this evening-length piece consists of a series of scenes which spring up spontaneously the way memories suddenly find their way into our consciousness. These scenes – defined through sparseness, stillness, silence, and a sense of time passing – were performed within Bessie Award winning lighting designer, Roderick Murray’s, set made entirely of LED lights. Luke Fasano, in his second project with Bartosik, created original music. Performers included Kimberly, Joanna Kotze, and Marc Mann. The Materiality of Impermanence was commissioned by Dance Theater Workshop in NYC, where it premiered on February 3-6, 2010.

The creation of The Materiality of Impermanence was made possible through commissioning funds from Dance Theater Workshop, as well as individual artist’s grants from the MAP Fund and the Jerome Foundation. A major portion of the work was developed in creative development residencies at: Jacob’s Pillow, Mount Tremper Arts, LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, and the Joyce Soho Artist-in-Residence Program.
